Senior Design Engineer (m/f/d) – Large Electric Marine Motors / Propulsion Systems

BEM Marine Power S.R.L. is the Romanian subsidiary of BEM Marine Power GmbH, a specialized company within the BEM Group focusing on the development, engineering, and supply of complete electrical propulsion systems for hybrid and fully electric vessels.

As part of its international growth strategy, BEM Marine Power S.R.L. is establishing a new production and engineering facility in Romania for large generators, large marine electric motors, and marine propulsion systems. The new site will play a key role in the industrialization, design, and manufacturing of electrical drive solutions for demanding marine applications worldwide.

Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Senior Design Engineer (m/f/d) with a strong background in the mechanical design of large electric machines for marine applications. This position is specifically aimed at professionals who already have many years of relevant industry experience in the design of large bow thruster motors, main propulsion motors, or comparable electric marine propulsion systems.

Main Responsibilities

Mechanical design and construction. Development and implementation of customized design solutions for marine propulsion applications, based on given electromagnetic concepts and overall system requirements

Creation of 3D models, 2D manufacturing drawings, and bills of materials

•Carrying out the necessary classical mechanical design calculations for:

• rolling bearings
• sleeve bearings
• shafts
• shaft-hub connections
• housings and structural parts

•Consideration of specific marine requirements such as:

• high torque and power density
• vibration and mechanical stiffness
• thermal behavior
• robustness in harsh maritime environments
• maintainability and operational reliability

•Maintenance and administration of technical design data in the product data management system (EPDM)

Additional Responsibilities

• Conducting feasibility studies for special technical solutions in coordination with technical sales and project management
• Preparation of technical specifications and support in cost estimations
• Coordination & alignment of technical specifications with customers and suppliers
• Support in the further development and standardization of large generators, marine motors and propulsion systems

Cooperation and Communication

• Reporting to Head of Engineering, Managing Directors, Plant Manager
• Coordination with Order Processing, Sales, and Electrical / Electromagnetic Engineering
• Technical handover and production alignment with manufacturing engineers
• Cooperation with engineering and production teams in Germany, Romania, and China
• Communication with customers, suppliers, and external technical partners in an international environment

• High customer satisfaction through technical sound support, clear documentation, and solution-oriented engineering

Your Profile

• University degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent education
• Several years of professional experience in the design of large electrical machines for marine applications
• Experience with 3D CAD design, ideally SOLIDWORKS
• Good understanding of the specific requirements of shipbuilding and marine propulsion applications
• Good English skills, written and spoken
• Good command of MS Office tools such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Able to adapt quickly to new technical challenges and areas of responsibility
