Description of the position
The Head of Department- Molecular Genetics will manage daily activities within the genetic diagnostic team.
He/ she will ensure the operation of essential equipment, maintain adequate supplies for routine diagnostic procedures, oversee and coordinate the personnel performing general lab duties. Responsibilities also include regularly meeting to align goals for the entire laboratory, and collaboratively and independently determine processes required to achieve those goals.
Will develop and refine online laboratory guidelines, protocols, and inventory systems and other lab organization tools to sustain a highly organized, functioning lab.
On demand will conduct research projects as assigned and evaluate new techniques, technology, reagents, and supplies for higher efficiency and performance while minimizing the costs.
PhD degree in science, biology or related field with a minimum of three years of full time experience in a research or diagnostic laboratory required. Previous experience managing personnel in a scientific environment is highly desirable. Must be able to perform molecular biology techniques with no or little guidance, including RNA/DNA extraction, Sanger sequencing, MLPA and or qPCR. Knowledge and experience with general laboratory equipment and materials required. Experience or interest in NGS and array-based methods and technologies is a plus. Must have strong interpersonal skills, respect, and a positive demeanor to build trust and lead the team when necessary. Must have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, a strong work ethic, motivation, curiosity, and enthusiasm to perform what's beyond the given tasks and responsibilities
